You would like to use the latest kernel but your Linux distribution does not offer the update and you can’t wait for it? Your hardware seems like giving you lots of issue with drivers? Here is the guide to upgrade your kernel (only for Ubuntu based distribution):

1. Go to Ubuntu Kernel Mainline page and go to the folder where the latest kernel is located. For this guide, I am upgrading my kernel for my Kubuntu desktop to 3.9.5.

2. Once you are in the page, download the all the necessary .deb files. For this example, I have downloaded the *all.deb and the *amd64.deb files (note: download the files according to your architecture) and placed them into a folder.

3. Launch Konsole and go to the folder which you have stored all your downloaded .deb files. Type the command ls to list down all the files as shown below.

4.  Type sudo dpkg -1 linux*.deb to install the packages. Key in your password and the process of upgrading will take place.

5. Once the process has completed, reboot your machine.

6. After you have login to your desktop, launch Konsole and insert the command : uname -r and you shall see your new kernel installed.

Please note that all upgrades beyond the version that your distribution has provided may break your system. All RC kernels in the Ubuntu Kernel Mainline are only for testing purposes, not for production machine.
